Gear indicator showing - and won’t shift.

Hello,

I’m relatively new to riding. Tried to look for some answers online but couldn’t find anything. I have a brand new 2024 MT-07 with 230 miles on the ODO. After riding today for about an hour as I pulled up to a stop sign I couldn’t get the bike in gear. It only displayed - on the gear indicator. The only thing I could do to get it to shift in to any gear was to slightly let the clutch out and then it would the indicator would show up and you could feel the bike get in to gear. I then tried to shift back to 1st and the bike just wouldn’t let me. It kept displaying - and the shift lever wouldn’t move. Had to let the clutch out slightly again to get it to kick in to gear. First time I’ve had this issue btw, and I’ve put all of those 230 miles on it

any ideas? I already checked the Clutch Switch but it didn’t seem to be moved or unplugged.

I would assume you had the clutch pulled in all the time and never releasing it while in neutral.  In this case, some of the gears in the tranny lose momentum when doing this.  In turn making it difficult to shift to first.  But you did right by releasing the clutch to allow the gears to sync.  And for the shift drum, forks to ease into place.  Also to look out for:

1.  The gearbox should work smoother after break-in.

2.  Be sure clutch cable and lever has proper slack or freeplay.  Having too much can cause gear shifting issue.

3.  Explain your MO when pulling to a stop sign.  There are two common ways:  A.  Shift to first gear before coming to a stop.  B.  Shift to neutral ("-" mark with a green neutral light) before you come to a stop.  Personally, I use method A for immediate drive.

Thanks for your help. I did definitely have the clutch lever pulled in when coming to a stop. I USUALLY downshift to 1st while coming to a stop at a light or stop sign. Just caught me off guard when I did it earlier and couldn’t switch in to another gear and again, the only way to see what gear or get the transmission to switch was to slowly let the clutch lever out to have it engage. Was a bit freaked out when the shift lever wouldn’t let me shift to anything lol

I wonder if the shift linkage has something interfering with it.  Since it's new, it might be worth taking the bike to the dealer you got it from and having them take a look.  Being in first gear and having the gear indicator not showing neutral and then not being able to shift out of first is not normal.
