My $0.02 for anyone taking a long distance trip, especially where they will be camping, is to take a look at the websites/forums on ultralight backpacking. They have the info on the best stuff to bring when the storage space is limited as well as reviews/comments on the equipment.

I'm planning a trip this summer from Georgia up to cali over through the National forests zig zapping states seeing architecture on my fz07 so seeing this was a reminder of stuff I need!
I was debating a trip from CA to GA, haha!

If I work it out where I can you could tag along for the trip back ;). I'm trying to figure out financing it as my main goal is to see great architecture and visit the National Parks and forests and camp out in beautiful places along the way. So I'm split between just going on a long trip about a month or two or doing several small trips about a week in link as far as 150 dollars in gas will take me and then 150 dollars in gas back. Where were you thinking of traveling on the way to Georgia?

I prefer hammock camping myself.

What I have learned over the years is that nothing short of Gore-tex is truly waterproof.

Anything that I absolutely do not want to get wet is sealed in multiple layers of protection from the elements.

I also learned to use layers when traveling to minimize the amount of gear you carry. The tourmaster flex riding gear is a good example. If where I'm riding is predominantly warm, I wear mesh gear and use my rain gear for added wind protection. I also carry thin fleece layer if the temps turn a little colder at elevation or after a rain.

Gore-tex boots are a must. Gore-tex rain gear, gloves also.

When you are comfortable the trip is enjoyable regardless of weather.

Dry bags are your friend. They range from raindrop to waterproof.

Hey, just a heads up, I'm looking at camping gear myself for my trip/trips. The cheapest room I could find was $50 a night for two nights only and camping is way more fun anyway. I didn't see a sleeping mat in your list of things for your trip or maybe you already have one but if not they are a must for sleeping on the ground. So far I like this one for it's price and good reviews but I'm still looking.

I plan on getting a hotel here and there for sure nothing like clean sheets and a hot shower.
twowheeladdict  I think your right on the GORTEX I have Klim outer gear but my boots are close out specials might have to upgrade that :)

I like that, it maintains it's loft better and so small when rolled up. Nice find!
yeah its about the size of 2 or 3 rolled up socks. When it came I thought that there is no way this thing will be good and thought I wasted my money. Filled it up laid on it and was impressed. I would say its more comfortable than a foam pad by far but compared to any other small air mattress I sure they are all about the same comfort wise.

OK, so in a former life, I was very active in a large trail club we have locally in DC. I was also the head of their backpacking classes in which we had 15 instructors and had multiple classes of varying difficulty. I was also the in-house gear junkie. Having said that, REI is a good outfit and MSR makes a good tent for sure. There is a lot of good camping gear, and a heck of a lot of crappy camping gear out there. Bad gear means that a supposed well planned trip can be pure crap when you are stuck in a leaking tent, or have a sleeping bag that doesn't live up to its rating, or when it's cold and raining and your cheap stove doesn't work. The list goes on...

There are a lot of good discount places and review sites as well. So, I'm going to throw up a bunch of links for everybody to play with...

Decent vendors

Many of these vendors have reviews on their products from users.

Here are some individual review sites that are really good too:

So after my accident the bike is back together and I'm taking off in a few days. I put on the wood craft bars and I think I might have made a mistake with them for the road trip but I'll let you know after the trip.

Finished up the trip put on 2400 miles and had everything I needed. only ended up camping for 2 nights but my goal next time would be to set up and camp in one location and take day trips.

I have to be honest if you want to take long trips keep the stock bars. the seating position for me was perfect with the stock bars, but that being said I think a rear set would help out.

Probably go to do a 4-5 day trip this year. I'm thinking a 20L tank bag & 40L duffle will do the job but I don't plan on camping. Thought about it thou, how much room does camping gear take up? 25L? 30L?

With camping gear I use a saddlebags, large duffle with sleeping bag in a sea to summit waterproof bag on top. 46liter topcase. If not camping you can leave duffle & sleeping bag at home, at least 30 Lbs lighter.   But!!! Motels will cost 3 times more than camping. As long as it's not too hot at night I will camp.

Sounds like an awesome adventure.
Have you consider a hammock shelter? They're typically a lot lighter and much more compact than tents. Plus it's an excellent nights sleep. As an avid hiker/camper, after I switched a few years back I've only used my tent a couple times since.

Yes I sure did,  and room wise your right even though the tent I picked up is small I had to get a few other things to make it more comfortable to sleep on the ground as where if I had a hammock I would not need it. Price wise you can pick up a nice hammock for cheep and I looked around but it looks like  you would still need a rain fly ( tarp) or the nice ones get up in price fast. So the only reason I didn't get one was because I could not find the one that was enclosed for the right price.

Thing about hammocks is you will need trees, 12' apart . Need a underfly & to keep mosquitoes from getting . Then it needs to be a inclosed hammock, rain fly, stakes, extra paracord/ rope. Hammocks sleep colder .

You can get a cheap tent but do not cheap out on a sleeping bag. I had a good bag but not good for anything cooler that 60 and it got in the low 40's and I froze. if anything you can bring a tarp for the rain but if you don't have a warm bag your going to be hurting.
