Jord
I know this is a silly subject but thought ide get your guys thoughts.... how do you get rid of them!! I’ve taken the bike as far over as I feel is possible, granted I’m no Rossi but the guy I ride with regularly and keep pace with has no strips at all! What am I doing wrong? mossrider
You're not doing anything wrong. Those Mich's have a very aggressive profile and would be difficult to scrub even on a track, let alone the street. I know it's tough not to care but try to ignore the strips, they really don't mean anything to those that know anything. Your buddy could be on a more pedestrian tire or riding dangerously or with poor form just to get rid of the 'strips'. I could post pics of certain track rubber that still has strips and the riders have had knees and elbows down and still leave rubber edges. That's actually a pretty common amount of rubber left on a street tire as manufacturers design them with a little extra for 'just in case' scenarios. In an emergency you'd be surprised how big of a bad check those tires would cover. 6
Jord
That’s a bit of comforting news thanks moss. I know it shouldn’t bother me but as you probably know it kinda does lol. Thanks
Devilman
Nothing wrong with having chicken strips. If you worn them down street riding then it could be the possibility that A. your tires are cheap or defected or B. You ride like a A-hole on the street. Don't be a A-hole because it is a lose, lose situation. LOL

I do that on purpose to scrub the outer edges for dingleberries who think they prove something by pointing out the strips. Just counterlean the bike and you can get 99% of it. You don't even have to be going that fast to do it. That's the point of proper riding form, you can carry way more speed with less lean by properly shifting your Center of mass around. klx678
There was an "article" in a magazine showing how to use a rasp file and some rubber cement to make it look like you were using all the tire... Really, who cares. I'm not too worried about getting over to the very edges of my tires. No ego there. If I think I'm fast all I have to do is hook up with a few friends who can put me back in place. There's always someone who is faster - and may just have those strips - as well as someone who can tell you how they are that fast. Just think of them as your margin of safety. You get in too hot, lean further, you have more to go.
Cruizin
Rubbing those off will just take time. Don't focus on trying to lean farther, or you'll wreck! Just keep riding those twisty roads and before ya know it, you too will need a new rear tire. I swear, the whole "chicken strip" thing was made up by a tire sales rep. Just ride and have fun, ignore the whole chicken strip shet. Yamaha MT-10 ForumYamaha Tracer 900 Forum Yamaha Ténéré 700 Forum
Bigturbomax
I agree with what everyone here is saying. Ride your own ride and practice using LESS lean angle. Don't sweat what anyone else thinks. I've been getting back into the sport over the last few years and learning more than i ever did when i was younger. I'm sharing these pictures of my back tire to exemplify the point. They were taken after some parking lot hang off and tight counter weighted figure 8s. I like to practice those maneuvers to stay sharp and ready to take evasive action. I also regularly practice quick stops. I guess what im saying is.....i was in a non-traffic situation while taking tight u turns AND counter weighting the bike.....and i STILL have this much unused rubber. pretty similar to what you got. Just keep riding, have fun, stay safe and forget about that tire PS take a track day if you can get one. Im dying for one haha Edited May 26, 2020 by Bigturbomax

Beemer
The guy that made up the thing about chicken strips probably had man issues. He probably never turned a wrench in his life and had soft, iPhone hands and got teased for it so he made up the chicken strip thing to patch his hurt feelings. It's all so dumb. 4 4 Beemer

Nah, can't be iphone hands... we've been hearing about them since the early 80s, maybe even earlier than that or under a different name. Perhaps we should call that last 1/2-1" intelligent strips. Demonstrating a street rider who knows their limits on the street require a margin of safety. Track time is a whole different animal.

I was gonna say, every since I learned how to lean properly on track, I get no where near the edge of my tire on the street even though I probably go too fast to admit. Although that may be a different story if we had "canyons" near Chicago.
Premium Member botticelli Posted May 26, 2020 Premium Member Share Posted May 26, 2020 Never use tire wear or "Chikn Strips" as an indicator of "proper" riding. Your tires will change, and scrub in differently based on...... your weight, suspension setup, tire type, brand, compound, temperature, and pressure, weather of the day, road/track condition and 5856584932 other factors. Don't even think about it, use your brain power to improve your riding...YES Giving any more brain cells to chicken strips... NO I can have a great day on the road or track session and have big ass chicken strips, and on a less than stellar day or slightly colder, or PSI or or 100 other things, have fully scrubbed in rubber. Hope this helps, ~Pete 2 1 '16 FZ07
Beemer
Father: "Honey, I hate to say it but our boy lost his chicken strips today." Mother: "Oh dear god no! Our little boy is becoming a man." (breaks down in tears) 6 Beemer
phanomenal07
Definitely dont worry about it bro. I'm super slow on track and I'm using almost all my tire. I'm trynna improve everything else I do on the bike so that I can go faster with the same lean angle. I'm not exactly sure what happens when you go pass the edge of the tire but im not sure I want to find out.

"> Chicken strips aren't on your tire. They are that imaginary collection of thoughts that is the ego - and we know from brain science there is no corresponding reality to that imaginary feeling "I am on the inside made of thought, confronting a world on the outside made of matter". Are you a thought, or are you that which is aware of thought? A life changing discovery, that can cause the ego that ruins all relationships, to disappear by simply seeing it was never there to begin with 1

D.A.
Whenever I put on new tires, one of the first things I do is ride the bike to a big, empty parking lot to scrub-in the edges of the new rubber. Similar to @Bigturbomax, I’ll do low speed, full lock circles and figure-eights, going about 5 miles an hour with the bike leaning all the way over and me counterbalancing way off the opposite direction. Doing this for 40 minutes will break in those edges. But I don’t do it to because of the squid-ish social phobia related having chicken strips. I do it because if I’m out riding the twisties at speed and get the bike leaned over so far it’s on the edges of the tires, I want those strips to grip the road rather than slip the way brand new rubber does. Meaning, I scrub in the edges of the tires for the same reason I scrub in the center — for traction.
