This darn MT 07 cant get rid of it.

I am about to buy my first bike in 20+ years, last bike i been riding was a honda cbr 600 -1995 , so when looking on new bikes the Honda cbr 650r 2021 , was my first choice. But that damn Yamha mt 07 videos keep popping up  And now i am not sure anymore about the Honda.  I will be riding to work now and then when weather allows its 20 miles on the Highway 100-110km  62- 68 mph.

Do you think i will regret not having a windshield and fairing?

The black Honda CBR 650R i think looks awesome, but mt 07 is quite cool looking as well.

What i cant get over is all the fun this bike seem to be and superb comfort. I know i will want to relearn doing wheelies and just enjoying some twisty roads over all.

I am not interested in going extreme quick but sure a bit over legal speed you tend to get sometimes when your late or bored on high way. But not loosing driving license fast Dont wanna risc my car and truck license !

Being 80kg or 176pound being 6 foot 184 cm i think both bikes are good in power for me.

Being on this forum i now i get a biased answer, but has anyone experience going either way?

And maybe i save some money not trading either one in.

Being in the city i can imagine cbr 650r isnt as fun as the MT 07.

Another thing is vibrationg, having some problem with numb fingers from drilling mountains a couple of years ago.

Honda salesman said inline 4 is less vibration which i am sure it is and yamaha said mt 07 is better cause its bigger vibration and inline 4 has smaller fine vibration which can hurt hands more.

To be honest, i am note sure either will be a problem or if one bike is better then the other.

The bike is not the best looking, but i think it looks cooler then cb 650r a but more modern design.

Any input, or should i even wait for the R7 arriving next year, but afraid its a bit extreme and uncomfortable even if it looks awesome.

Ride safe and any input is apreaciated.

Consider a yzf-r7.. It is an MT-07 with the fairing...  You can have it all. :)

I do have a Honda but I fear they produce too many boring bikes. The MT-07 is certainly not that.  I sometimes wonder if Honda aims for degrees of extreme engineering excellence according to budget, and then quite forgets that people ride their bikes.

I have to agree with those above. Keep the Yamaha. Yamaha knows they are making toys and excitement is a design criteria. Honda makes pet rocks.

My buddy races a 2006 Honda CBR600 that has 43,500 race miles on it. YAWN! It's never been opened up other than a clutch and a valve check that came in spec. Holy F.

I thought I wanted a FZ-09 or a Tracer 900 and bought my FZ about a week ago, pretty much unseen, just on the internet and I can tell you, it is just as much fun as it looks like and what videos show. The 75hp are plenty to do highway commute and with a bigger windscreen it’s quite comfortable. I don’t regret buying it at all, it’s an amazing bike, does everything, nothing extraordinary, nothing really bad, but everything extremely well.
I had a Bandit prior to my FZ07 and a FZ6 before that. I tested a FJR but thought it too big and bulky. I also thought about a Hornet, but after looking at a few, decided to stay with Yamaha.

Find a used FZ/MT-07 for sale, and get a test ride.

In theory, the 4-cylinder should have less vibration, but I have never noticed any vibration with my FZ and the stock bars.

Obviously the big difference is where the power is hitting. I have had my share of 4-cylinders, and I must say that I absolutely prefer a low-mid range torquey hit any day over the high rpm ones - Way more fun!

The good news is that your two choices are both solid dependable bikes with one being fun, and the other just boring 😄

I think if I am gonna learn wheelies it’s easy choice . Remember clutch wheelies was hard on cbr 600 cause power was so high up. I could never wheelie more then a little bit uncontrolled from the ground. The torque on my 07 seem you get good controlz

has there been any upgrade to mt 07 except lights since the release ?

What do you mean it is boring ? Cause low maintance or cause of high end torque ? I remember my Honda was crazy and did like 80mph in second gear or something. But maybe it was extremly linear ?

I remember my pocket rocket a honda 80 CC high wheels, i dont know why but i remember it being crazy. And i could spin the tarmac on all 6 gears. But then again i was 12 and it weighted nothing :)  But horsepower to weight was probably pretty decent.

The Yamaha seem extremly reliable except i read some bad corosion on exhaust ? Other than that the engine seem bulletproof.

I rather not having a throttle that suddenly get alot of speed over a certain rpm, i like the linear power.

I think we need some vibration to remind us we have an ICE underneath us.  Otherwise we might as well go electric (when affordable).

Just do it!

It is quite comfortable on the highway, you can get a windshield to block the wind. In the city it does great as well. Handle bars don't vibrate as much as older bikes, I say go for it, the mt07 is a great bike.

I am looking forward more and more to get a my 07, told a working friend he said I will get bored in two weeks and to get mt 10 haha. I said it looks awesome but I don’t wanna die :)

Feel mt 07 is perfect balance of power and handeling.

Yes. Ride a Yamaha something next to it's Honda something competitor. Doesn't matter; atv, scooter, motorcycle, generator, side by side, same take away.

The Yamaha will be lighter, seem edgier, more eager, have more contemporary styling and seem playful in comparison to Honda.

The Honda will be solidly over built, have a more conservative everything from power to paint, run flawlessly, and seem very workman like next to the Yamaha.

There's nothing wrong with either approach, just different and appeals to different people.

Some like it low and slow, some high and tyte. Perhaps most telling is that Honda makes lawn mowers, Yamaha makes musical instruments. 😎

Re: getting bored with it

I went to the dealership to buy a FZ09. The power was very good, but it wasn't the maniac the internet made it sound like. I also didn't care for the handling, so I didn't buy one. The salesman suggested I test an 07 while I was there. I wasn't interested in riding it at all, but I tested it anyway. I knew I wanted that that bike before I got out of third gear. I cut the test ride short because I was so eager to get back to buy the bike. I don't rack up huge bikes, but I ride the bike at minimum 2 days per week for the last four years. It's still just as fun as it was on day one.

I've never bought a bike to keep. They were always the new toy to have fun with until something cool comes along. Variety is fun and it's good to ride everything, but I'm not getting rid of my 07.

So definitely get a test ride. I wanted an 09 so much ( still love the looks) but I didn't enjoy riding it at all. You might be the same way about the 07.

Can you elaborate a bit more what made you like the mt 07 more then 09? On paper they look almost the same with weight and looks except mt 09 got some more power.

I'm 6'2" , 33" inseam and 220 lbs. I thought the 07 would be to small to be comfortable, but I was wrong. Though the 09 felt a big larger overall, as far as ergos, it felt like my feet were too far behind me. The 07 feels more balanced in this situation.

The steering on the 09 felt bad to me. I don't like bikes that lean in fast. It sounds racy..." It leans in fast!"...but it makes a bike feels twitchy IMO. The first 09 I rode was used, so I thought it might just be the profile of the tires that I didn't like, so they gave me another one to ride ( stock tires) and it felt the same. To explain what I'm talking about, when I got on the entrance ramp to the highway the 09 felt like it didn't want to hold a steady lean through the curve. It felt like as soon as you started leaning the bike that it wanted to lean further and further on its own. So under normal riding conditions I felt like I kinda had to fight against the bike to just lean normally. The 07 is very neutral in this regard. It leans only when you tell it to, and it feels balanced and consistent regardless of how fast you're cornering or how steep you're leaning.

The 09 is obviously a stronger engine, but I don't care about 100mph+ speeds. From 0-40 mph the 07 just wants to wheelie, so there's more power than you can use at wide open throttle anyway. From 0-60 mph, where I like to play the most, the 07 doesn't give up hardly any power to the 09. Above 60mph you can start appreciating the extra horsepower of the 09, but the 07 cruises easily at 80-90mph. The 09's extra power would be fun for high speeds blasts or track use, but for general riding the 07 is still pretty rowdy feeling. I've cruised my 07 at 100+ mph and it was perfectly happy.

Basically, the 07 felt lighter and more nimble than the 09. So much more fun to ride that I didn't care about giving up the extra power at all. The vibrations of the twin are more of a thump, whereas multi cylinder engines feel more like a buzziness, which I find more annoying. The brakes felt pretty equal. The stock suspension on the early 09's were better than the 07, but it wasn't much better. The nimble, light handling of the 07 was more important to me than the slightly better damping of the 09. You can upgrade suspension components, but you're stuck with whatever the actual geometry of the chassis is.

In short, the 09 felt like a good torquey sport bike that didn't have a ton of horsepower ( by modern standards), but had ok enough comfort to ride everyday. The 07 felt like a nimble toy that wanted jump and romp around while making cool little growling noises. There was just something more  fun and playful about it. I'd compare the 09 to a decent entry level sports car while the 07 is more of a muscle car that wanted to jump and snarl and just be rowdy.

Honda's focus right now seems to be on offroad as far as performance goes. Their current 450's are dang impressive bikes, even the street legal versions. The current street models seem to be geared towards economy. I mean, the NC750 bikes aren't fast, but they've got awesome storage and can knock down 100mpg pretty easy. That's pretty damn cool! Honda seems to have a knack for releasing a killer model that you never saw coming, and when you least expect it. They've been pretty chill for quite a while now. Nobody saw the CRF450L coming until it was already here, and it's been amazing. I feel like they might just have something awesome to release before too awful long...

Hey, at least Honda didn't try to sell us a trike 😉 <- friendly Nikken jab

You nailed it!!!! That sums up what nearly every 07 own thinks/feels-

Wow this answer is more then i could ask for. Do you think your answer hold for 2021 the new mt 09? If I could wish for something that is that mt 07 would get more of the double light and wide air scope from mt 10 , cause this is a beautiful design as well as the ico fluo color it fits so good.

I think this nervous feeling you talking about is something they tried to fix with mt 09 2021 I think. But maybe it’s flawed from beginning so difficult to fix.

And again asking if my 07 power is enoug is like asking is a BMW m3 enough. The power seem to differ less in the fun speeds under 80mph.

I have changed my mind and been trying hard to sell my self the cbr 650r and the more I look at mt 07 it seems so fun and cool looking . I can even imagine doing some light off road if I can find some protection for it under.

Thank you for long and thoroughly answer.

There is also the issue of insurance. I know that many insurance companies do not consider the FZ/MT-07 a sport bike, and the premiums are much lower than say a MT-09. I would bet that a 4-cyclinder is likely more expensive to insure than a 2-cylinder.

If that's not an issue, that great. For some folks it is, and the premiums can be stupidly high.
