Crappy assembly job or tampered?

I wouldn't worry about it.... Yamaha usually does a better job of cleaning it off. I've owned KTM & Husqvarna, that look much worse than that (when new). If it bugs you, just peel it off- that's what Yamaha does at the factory. Yours probably just got missed-

Cheers mate usually I don’t worry about stuff like this but I just bought the bike and not familiar with the fz series so didn’t know how they Assemble. All good brothernem safe riding:)

I'd think you'd know by now if it was any problem.   Something would be oozing out if there was some machining flaw.  A bit of overflow gasket compound - no big deal.

I have yet to see gray sealant on Japanese engine, always black. Never seen it been smeared like that either.

Factories don't use yamabond, hondabond ...etc.
