May 16, 20223 yr I hope people remember this demonstration when it comes time for fuel and air filters as well. I've not seen anything able to outperform, or even hang with, pleated paper filters. Plus, who doesn't appreciate biodegradable/renewable stuff nowadays?
May 20, 20223 yr My local track mandates only OE filters are used. This video makes me happy because I now feel even better about not being able to "upgrade" my oil filter...I already have the best filter installed. Although I do wish I could choose maybe a different brand in the OE style but that is just because I want something else to debate over in my mind (and probably build a spreadsheet for). LOL
May 20, 20223 yr My local "club" racing organization banned the use of K&N oil filters. They had ONE that failed, and dumped oil on the track. I think it was kind of a knee-jerk reaction to one incident. I don't race, but do about a dozen track days a year. I run K&N on all my bikes. Been doing so for decades, and never had any problems of any kind..... ""W.O.T. until you see god, then brake"
May 21, 20223 yr The built-in safety wire point on the K&N's is super nice. I bet that rule upset a bunch of folks.
November 2, 2024Nov 2 so guys, what are the best 2 or 3 oil filters everyone would recommend ? Watched the F9 video, so it would seem paper filters do the job, but which brand would anyone recommend ?
November 2, 2024Nov 2 I've been using the hiflofiltro ones my local shop sells without issues, but they are changed every 6 months and probably see about 2500 miles tops before they are changed. I'd prefer OEM Yamaha if they were easier for me to find though.
November 2, 2024Nov 2 I just watched a bunch of Lake Speed Jr.'s "Motor Oil Geek" videos on oil and one was about high flow filters. The main point was what high flow will indicate. High flow means less restriction and less restriction means more open filter media. Here is his video made by Total Seal for Youtube:
November 8, 2024Nov 8 One thing I forgot, most all oil filter setups have some sort of bypass valve to allow oil flow to meet a specific level designed into the valve, should the filter become blocked reducing flow below the set level. I would venture to say it would take a lot of blockage to activate the bypass valves, but I do not know. Interesting question for someone like Lake Speed J.r, the Motor Oil Geek. And personally I'd stick with OEM just because. Because they don't want to pay for engine rebuilds should the filter be inadequate under hard use. Edited November 8, 2024Nov 8 by klx678
November 15, 2024Nov 15 Thanks guys for all the input. Much appreciated. Guess I will stick with OEM.
November 24, 2024Nov 24 Did some more digging into if the "hiflofiltro" oil filters I use have a bypass valve. They do, and a PDF I found claims they meet or exceed all OEM specs as well as use quality components from Japan, Germany, and Finland that are then assembled in their Thailand factory. They apparently are certified to make OEM filters for companies as well. Good enough for me since they are readily available near me and Yamaha OEM are less so.
