Triple Jim
He was lubricating only the rollers (5), which turn on the bushings (4). They need lubrication, but the bearing surfaces that take the drive load are between the pins (3) and the bushings (4), and the only way to get in there is by getting lubricant between the inner plates (2) and the outer plates (1). For motorcycles, most of us use sealed chains, which keep the pin-bushing lubricant sealed in, but it's still important to get some lubricant between the plates to keep the seals lubed. Like with bicycle chains, we also need to keep the rollers lubed regularly because their bearings are not sealed.
