Global Moderator Guru Posted July 23, 2014 Global Moderator Share Posted July 23, 2014 I have been looking into upgrading my standard H4 light bulb. I far as I can tell, there are 3 options out there. On my previous bikes I upgraded the standard bulb with one from PIAA and had good results. http://www.pureautoparts.com/images/15224.jpg I could also try and fit a Xenon kit which increases the light output, but you will have to get creative hiding al the extra wiring and stuff. http://i00.i.aliimg.com/wsphoto/v0/556730094/HOT-Free-Shipping-35-55W-3-2A-HID-Bi-xenon-kit-HI-LO-bulb-H4-2.jpg Or I could consider going LED. There are kits out there, but I might get into trouble with the size of the fan that is usually attached to the back of the bulb. And there a some kist that don't switch to high beam anymore. http://www.prlog.org/12153768-h4-led-headlight.jpg
Cruizin
I like LED and will probably add it to my bikes Yamaha MT-10 ForumYamaha Tracer 900 Forum Yamaha Ténéré 700 Forum
Global Moderator Guru Posted July 23, 2014 Author Global Moderator Share Posted July 23, 2014 Me too, but I have been reading mixed reviews on them. The light is nice and bright but some have 'hot spots' and we don't have much room behind the headlight to fit all the added hardware. There is a lot of cheap junk out there. Technically they are illegal and a with lot of them you can't switch to high beam. Cree seems the best option as far as I can tell. I think we need some supporting vendors that send me free kits so I can try them out and review them. (rofl)
manuel
I would also like LED, but somehow I am developing an allergy to them (based on my turn signal rabid rate) Maybe I need some time to heal.
Global Moderator mjh937 Posted July 23, 2014 Global Moderator Share Posted July 23, 2014 Does the LED headlight bulb work well with our reflector? I would think they would not focus the light as well as a traditional bulb. Of course I do not know why I would think this. I seem to remember reading something along those lines at one time. Premium Member V8titanpwr Posted July 23, 2014 Premium Member Share Posted July 23, 2014 I'll be ordering some hid's when my bike comes in. Guru, would it be too much to ask to post a pic of the inside of the headlight, I would like to see how much room there is in there. Keep the rubber side down and the shiny side up. Global Moderator Guru Posted July 23, 2014 Author Global Moderator Share Posted July 23, 2014 You wish is my command.. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/33459059/IMG_0971.jpg https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/33459059/IMG_0972.jpg https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/33459059/IMG_0973.jpg Not great pictures, but you get the idea. When the headlight is installed I can put my finger between the plug and the frame. So there is not much space to play with.
Premium Member V8titanpwr Posted July 23, 2014 Premium Member Share Posted July 23, 2014 It actually looks like there would be room here: The ballast box isn't very big at all. I have the one for my Honda under the gas tank. Heres the comparison of the bulb that came with the light compared to the hid, definitely makes you a lot more visible at night. I know there is some hate for people who run hid's because they are too bright, blah blah blah, good, that means that you can see me. Keep the rubber side down and the shiny side up. Cruizin
I like LEd's because they don't draw much power and free up extra power for accessories. The price has also really come down and they last damn near forever. Yamaha MT-10 ForumYamaha Tracer 900 Forum Yamaha Ténéré 700 Forum
Premium Member GAZ Posted July 23, 2014 Premium Member Share Posted July 23, 2014 It doesn't seem like there's enough room for that LED fan. I would personally prefer LED as it seems more constant over the other two options. These bikes do have some of the worse headlight spread I've seen so any upgrade to them is worth it. krashed
Hella makes a 100/55 watt H4. High beam will be much brighter. Just be aware that with increased wattage comes an increase in heat. Cruizin
That's why I wanna go LED. Less heat, brighter light, longer life and less power. Yamaha MT-10 ForumYamaha Tracer 900 Forum Yamaha Ténéré 700 Forum
Global Moderator Guru Posted July 25, 2014 Author Global Moderator Share Posted July 25, 2014 That's why I wanna go LED. Less heat, brighter light, longer life and less power. Me too. But I'd like to see someone else take the jump first and figure out the limited space we have behind the head light. And I wonder if the reflector will work with led. I have already ordered my hid kit so when the bike arrives, that's the first thing to go on. I know it's not LED, but it will give you guys an idea of the space we have to work with. krashed
Checkit: http://www.fz-09forums.com/forum/yamaha-fz-09-appearance-modifications/4794-cree-led-headlight-modification.html Read to the end... I can see the FZ headlight comes off a lot easier than the 9, all you do is pull the two Frankenstein screws at the top and she's off. I found this a few days ago, looks a little more compact:http://www.cyclopsadventuresports.com/3600-Lumen-H4-H6M-LED-Headlight-bulb-_p_83.html
Global Moderator Guru Posted July 26, 2014 Author Global Moderator Share Posted July 26, 2014 Cool, thanks for sharing. I am still worried that it might stick out too far, especially the Cree one. I got one finger space when the headlight is mounted with the original bulb. I guess there is only one way to find out. nmucat
I hazed over my headlights in my last car upgrading to a brighter bulb. kept thinking it was the outside, but nope it was inside caused by the bulbs. I'll look for a LED and might be the second mod I do after cutting the plate bracket.
