Unimpressed with the Akra Ti.

I finally got around to installing my exhaust tonight and I have to admit, I'm more than a little unimpressed with the 'baffled' sound.

Either my computer speakers are off or I've been bamboozled by the countless YouTube videos I've watched to prepare myself for this day.

Anyway, I'm guessing removing the 'DB killer' and drilling a few holes is my next step however I've tried and the darned thing won't budge.

Any advice on how to get the baffle out with out ripping it to shreds? I guess I *might* want to put it back in one day.

Yeah the sound with the db killer in is a little lackluster to say the least. Really the only way to get it out is to take the muffler off and use a wooden dowel from the inlet side and hammer it out working from one side to the other. Of course remove the screw before doing this. They are stuck in there pretty good. Some guys have gotten good sound results out of the db killer by either drilling holes in the inner tubes or simply cutting them shorter. A couple of threads down a guy fitted a FZ09 akra ti db killer in and it sounds pretty good as well.

Use it a little before doing changes that can't be taken back.

When it is new, the packing is further suppressing sound but after riding a few days the sound starts getting louder as the internal packing gets burned. At least that is what happened to mine. After installation I could barely hear some difference to the factory exhaust but now, 300 km later, it is definitely sounding louder. Of course it will never be too loud with the db killer in place.

Mine (Akra c.f.) was the same way for awhile. It especially sounded quiet when just idling or cruising but when I cracked the throttle fairly hard it sounded great. Now it just sounds great all the time and not too loud, either. I say give it some time for the packing to get worked in before you go destroying it with a drill. DewMan installed his TI awhile back and I thought it sounded too quiet also but just yesterday I pulled up next to him and he revved it and I told him to rev it again so he did. His pipe sounds real good now, the packing has broken down some. If you want your pipe to sound loud all the time then sure, yank that db killer but you may not not like hearing it louder all the time, especially on longer trips so choose wisely.

Agreed with others. Break it in a bit. After 22k miles, even with the baffle-in, my Akra Carbon was too loud. I got a new muffler and it became 50% quieter.

Baffle out sounds great, but it is headache inducing (even with earplugs) after more than a few minutes.

Wait, there’s a screw AND a tack weld?

Well, shet. Where’s the weld?

Im determined to get it out at this point. The current baffle and just about FUBAR and at this point in the battle... it’s personal.

Alian, There is definitely at least one post on this on this forum with pics. Some pre/post vids as well.

Exhaust noise/sound is definitely personal. I love the Akra Carbon snail pipe with dB killer in sound. Don't find it too loud at all. Is with the killer out though.

I just got my MT-07. Had the dealer install the Time full system with no dB killer. I rode the bike home (roughly 20 miles) and quickly realized I'd made a mistake by having them remove the baffle.

I shouldn't have to take the muffler off to reinstall the DB killer right? I'm hoping I can just cost it in WD-40 and slide it in and put the screw back in. I honestly haven't looked at it very closely yet.

Yes, just slide it back in (It may require some gentle persuasion)  and  secure with the screw. 👍

Just a quick word about this statement.

"Either my computer speakers are off or I've been bamboozled by the countless YouTube videos I've watched to prepare myself for this day."

I can distinctly hear the difference between the baffled and unbaffled Titanium pipe in this video. Seems to me the DB killer is doing it's job as intended. I have very good speakers and a kick-ass Sound Blaster sound card so at least from where I'm sitting/listening I wouldn't feel bamboozled by this video. Maybe your audio needs an upgrade. Are you using motherboard sound? Motherboard audio is shi.t.

Plot thickens. Took the rubber piece off to expose the screw only to discoverer the dealer did not out the screw in. I called. They claim they did. They're clearly mistaken.

The only one I can find for sale is from Japan and will take who knows how long to get here.

Any idea wherewhere I can get one of these state side and if this is in fact the correct part.

Thank you. You've been incredibly helpful so far.

Worst case you should be able to order it from Akra directly, but I'd contact Akra to get the specs of the screw and source it from a local nut & bolt place like FastenAll or similar company.

Edit: Yes it is the correct part # for the Akra-Ti

Maybe check your "Db killer" (assuming they gave it back to you?) If the Db killer is removed, there will be nothing for the screw to seat into on the exhaust system. The Db killer has the female threads that the screw threads into.  Maybe I'm mis-interpreting what you're communicating?

I did check the dB killer. No screw. I understand what you're saying though. No threads for them to screw it in to so....

You'd think they wouldn't give back one part without the other though.

If you can get them to give you the size & thread pitch, you could go to a hardware store or order it online from like fastenal or something. This would be MUCH quicker and probably way cheaper too. There should be nothing proprietary about that little bolt.

OK. This may help...may not.

Just checked my Akra carbon. It has a 6M button head stainless allen bolt  ( ie 6x1mm) also under a rubber plug. The thread in the dB killer is a stainless rivnut ( a rivetted in threaded piece).

If yours is missing, they may have removed it, or it was accidently not fitted at the factory ( pronounced by the owner as "a-krap-o-vich"). Even the mighty scorpion ( the translation of akrapovic from Slovenian from what I understand after a nasty stoush with Ford and their garbage car name) makes the occasional mistake. The first KTM690 full exhausts didn't clear the bottom of the motor without the application of a touch of pipe mod.

Getting a rivnut to replace it in stainless is going to be difficult, especially one that short if it is the same length as the carbon muffler one.  Al is more common, but the outlet of an exhaust probably isn't a place for Al.

Another approach may be to thread the dB killer in a new hole, if the killer can be rotated a little.

Go forth and modify my son...go forth and modify...

Hi mate,

Ive just installed the Akra Ti and removed the DB killer myself, but it depends which one you have. Mine is the one with the Akrapovic sticker in a yellow font, instead of the engraved versions.

To remove the DB killer, first you have to remove the muffler from the headers. After that, you remove the screw at the back and then you have to hit the DB killer from behind (inside the exhaust) and knock it out.

I actually have a video on youtube about it!
