Horde Airbox - Pricey but worth it...

Thought I would post my review of Hordes Airbox upgrade. I am really, really pleased with the upgrade.  As far as power mods are concerned, I am coming from a 2WDW flash w/ Yosh Carbon and snorkel delete. I am going to be honest, I was a little disappointed after the exhaust and flash. I think my expectations may have been a bit high.  The bike certainly felt better but I couldn't say that I felt the extra power. The bike seemed smoother and my mpg took a serious hit.  Despite investing a grand in exhaust and flash I was seriously considering taking the hit and trading it in for a bike (MT-09) with a bit more power.  Before I resorted to such drastic measures I pulled the trigger on the intake upgrade. Supposedly the airbox upgrade is worth about 4hp, about half of what I should have gained with the exhaust and flash alone.  I sent my ecu back to Nels for the update and got to work installing Horde's intake.

Installation wise, it is a mother to get the factory airbox out. I'm sure it is possible to remove it cleanly but I didn't have much luck. The process put some pretty large scratches in the airbox plastic. Since it was already scratched up I ended up just cutting it out. If I ever go back to stock (I won't) I'll need to purchase another airbox.  Once the factory airbox was out, installing Hordes system was mostly straightforward. The tolerance on the mounting bracket could be better. You need to be really careful not to cross thread bolts through the bracket. The bracket (at least mine) wanted to pitch the bolts up. Horde should consider elongating these holes a little more before getting the bracket anodized.  Once the airbox is in I went ahead and re-synced my throttle bodies. They were off quite a bit and I'm sure it was due to the airbox as I had just synced them a week or two ago as part of the 4k mile service. If you go this route make sure you sync the TBs. The good news is with the airbox gone, getting at the vac lines is a piece of cake. It was possible to sync the TB without removing anything (despite what Jake the Gardensnake would have you believe) with enough patience. With the airbox replaced with horde's setup it is literally a 5 minute job.

This installation was done a good two weeks ago. Today the weather was warm enough (45f) to get a ride in. I have to say I am really really impressed. The bike now feels how I expected it to feel with just the exhaust and flash. I took the bike over to a county highway and pinned it through all 6 gears. I didn't realize the front wheel was floating until it touched pavement again in 4th gear. The bike feels fantastic.  Logically the 4hp gain the intake therotically provided shouldn't have accounted for this much of a performance gain, but I can't otherwise explain it. Perhaps Nels tune with the Yosh on my bike wasn't spot on but now the tune with the airbox + the yosh is? Not sure but the whole bike woke up. I'll be hanging on to the bike now for a few more seasons I suspect.

I went straight from stock and my sentiments are the same although I didnt sync the TBs, seems just fine to me, I am also using a PC-V with Hords mapping. I dont know how else to say it but now the bike hauls ass, feels right smoother, engine braking is reduced...its just..different, new.   On top of the great feels, it looks and sounds very cool, that stock airbox looks like absolute ass and I took great pleasure in cutting/throwing it out.

EDIT...I should also mention Im running a Yoshi r77.

Stay safe out there 👍

You described my EXACT experience!!! I did the PVC route rather than flash, but OMG!!!! It finally performed like it should. Hordpower airbox is the best $300 I've spent on my bike-

Good to see you're still around puss

I haven't pulled the trigger on hord's airbox due to joblessness

I keep meaning  to finish modifying the spare box I have,  but I don't have the space, or time between Dr appts

At least all of you with it are having fun and we can live vicariously through you

Hey thanks! Yeah this year (summer) was complete bust for riding, our life/work balance was utter dog shite and that needs a serious re-write. Now we're back into 6 + months of that sweet sweet snow.  Next summer though will be the summer of Puss. ;)

I pop in every now and then but sadly I have nothing to report and my bike gets dustier by the day.

...and multi Dr. appointments? Not prying for personals but I hope its nothing too serious for you....AND that the job scene makes a comeback for you sooner rather than later. Damn man, fingers crossed for you.  All the best.

According to dyno charts, Hordes airbox seems to mainly affect higher rpm range (+-6.5k rpm and up), but I'm curious to know what your dyno butt felt after the upgrade ? (roughly the same as the dyno charts ? or you rather felt a difference throughout the whole rpm range ?)

I feel ya, snow got here a bit too early this year (since 1st week of November and barely never got above 0 Celsius since!) and gotta wait until +- early May...  But that 1st ride of the year after the 6 months of abstinence though... 🤩

The Hord was the last “power” mod I did to my bike and there is a difference imo as it doesn’t fall as flat on its face towards redline. I can’t feel the difference anywhere else however which I guess is a good thing. I don’t know if an active tune with another flash would make a difference or not.

@EZrider

Its hard to tell when banging through the gears. You don't spend much time below 6k. The bike is pulling much harder than before, evident by the number of times I was bouncing off the Rev limiter in 2nd and 3rd.  The bike is ready to shift much sooner than anticipated. If you already have an exhaust and tune and your retune is free or you are in the selection process for intake and exhaust, the 300 for hordes airbox is a no brainier.   If you are looking at having to pay 2 - 300 for another tune I may reconsider.

That's a good start.

There's just a couple things left to have the world greatest hooner bike. A set of Web cams, a ported head by JD Hord or Zoran at TWF and some bored throttle bodies. You're under 2 grand away. Thing would slaughter tards around town, drop litre bikes for dead stoplight to stoplight, beat down 600's on a crooked road, loft the front with a thought at any speed and, make you public enemy #1 with five-oh.

@mossrider funny you bring this up. I think bolting more crap on at this point won’t yield the returns for the cash outlay. JD’s shop is less than 2 hours from me and I have an enclosed trailer so now the wheels are turning in overdrive. All your points are very valid.
One problem is I am going to be only able to use 1 arm for about 10 weeks after Wednesday’s 3rd surgery on my collar bone to try and fix last years accident 😕 Without doing the wrenching myself the 2 grand gets to 3 real quick. But considering that winter lasts forever here it still may be an option.

Send your head to Zoran for a full monte. When it's done have it sent here. Meet me here (road trip) with the rest of your kit and we'll build you a monster...by the time your wing is back up you're all set to do something else stupid....I mean epic...

That made me lol 😂. I was able to destroy my shoulder before motorcycle riding season last year on a sled. What will they charge for the “full monte”. You can pm if you want. This is all very tempting

Maybe it is a good thing I am going to be a one arm bandit. You guys don’t help my obsession for more power but damn it I want to do the full monte. Either one of you going to be in south East Michigan any time soon? You can help spend more money I shouldn’t
