Smaller rear sprocket

Any source please for a 40T or 41T rear sprocket? Where can I order it?

For a 2017 FZ07.

Smallest I found is 42T.

Thanks!

Have never ordered from this website before but it showed up on a quick google search. Might have to scroll down a bit to the 40 tooth

Why such a small sprocket? A lot of extended highway riding?

Yes, highway riding and the old fart that regularly rides my bike (🙂) like the lowered revs...

Thanks for the info!

I did found 40T and 41T rear sprockets.

40T are only available in aluminum and in 520 pitch (would force me to buy a complete 520 kit).

41T are available in both steel and aluminum as well as 520 and 525 pitches.

Because my 17T front is new and my chain only have 19000 km, I ordered a 41T, 525 steel (for durability) unit.

Thanks again for the links!

How is the 17 T front sprocket in real world riding? What is most notable?

So far, I only made a few short rides with a 17T.

The most noticeable is the lowered RPM. With oem 16T, indicated speed was 99 km/hr @ 4000 rpm and it is now 105 km/hr.

At 4000 rpm in sixth gear, roll on torque is obviously slightly lower. I never wheelie but I assume that 3rd gear wheelie are not possible anymore.

Going from a full stop in 1st gear is also affected but the engine is plenty torquey so it’s not a problem at all.

My goal is to gear up in order for the "new" 5th gear to be about the same as stock 6th. Then, "new" 6th gear will be a true overdrive.

I finished up me longer gearing quest. Stock sprockets are 16/43. I went to 17/43 and now am to 17/41 and here are some thoughts/results.

I always have been gearing up my bikes and made no exception for my 2017 FZ07. I do so because I like lowered revs and because I'm not looking for any performance increase.

To have an overview, I wrote the 1 to 6 gear ratios for OEM (as written in repair manual) as well as the calculated ones with the changed sprockets. My target was kind of having an additional "7th" gear as an overdrive while being able to easily get off a stop with no clutch slipping in "new" 1st gear. With stock gearing, it is easy to start from a standing stop in 2nd gear so I knew stock 2nd gear ratio was OK to target. I was also trying to get the same ratio as stock 6th gear with modified 5th one. I think I succeded everywhere. I could have got closer results with a 40T rear but I skipped this idea because the only available ones where in aluminum with 520 pitch.

RATIOS        1st       2nd        3rd       4th       5th       6th       Speed* @ 4000 RPM

16/43:   2.846   2.125   1.632   1.300   1.091   0.964     99 kph

17/43:   2.679   2.000    1.536   1.224   1.027   0.907    104 kph

17/41:   2.554   1.795   1.465   1.167   0.979   0.865   109 kph

* Indicated speed (not GPS)

As you can see, "new" 5th gear is now very close to stock 6th and and "new" 1st gear is slightly shorter than stock 2nd so a standing stop take off is easy. Final speed at 4000 RPM in "new" 5th gear is 97 kph compared to stock 6th gear that was 99 kph. So, if new 6th gear feel ever too tall for a situation, I can shift down to 5th gear which is about the same as stock 6th one.

Final result is more speed at a given RPM. Fuel mileage has not been checked yet as I only have a few km ridden so far with 17/41.

Hope this helps (without being too confusing...).

After I added reeds to my 1972 Kawasaki H2, I did the same thing you did.  I went from 15/47 to 16/44, which puts the new 4th gear where stock 5th was.  It still has plenty of wheelie ability, but cruising is now quieter with less vibration.  It's much more pleasant to ride long distances on now.

I'm still thinking about my MT-07, but it's stock for now.

Where did you get the 17t 525 front sprocket?

Local dealer. From memory, brand is Vortex. But it doesn’t have the rubber cushionning.

Usually the aftermarket ones don’t have that rubber dampner. Sprocket specialists were on back order last time I checked, I just tried to order another one from them online and it seemed to go through. I may get a call though and say they are back ordered again. If that’s the case, I’ll try my local dealer. Probably SunStar or Vortx would have something.
Thanks-

Some does as the front JT on my Versys 1000 is rubber dampened. But front JT for FZ07 is steel only.

Well, after about 1500 km (950 miles) with 17/41 gearing, I went back to stock rear sprocket (17/43).

I thought the 700cc engine would be torquey enough but I was feeling that I was loading it too much with 41t and I was almost always riding in 5th gear. I just did a few hundred kms with the 43t rear and the bike is noticeably peppier. The added rpm on a highway are really acceptable.

My Versys 1000 do works incredibly good with +1/-2 gearing but the engine is quite more powerful and torquier than the smaller twin.

Anybody want to buy an almost new rear 41T sprocket? It's a Vortex steel with 525 pitch.

I just check shipping cost to 32669.

Total incl. shipping would be $70 US (5 business days) or $65 US (8 business days).

I do Paypal if interested.
