Popular Post fzhooligan
So, it took me a minute, or a week, to get to uploading the pics but here goes nothin. My first diy/how-to/install post. Forgive any errors. First off, Dobeck was awesome and the customer service was great. Very quick to respond to my many questions. And you can't beat a forum member discount ;-) Install Time: 45min Difficulty: 2.5/5 (I may be biased to thinking it's easy. I am a service technician for a...non-fossil fuel powered car company...so this sort of thing can be done in my sleep haha)Tools required:-Pocket screwdriver (flathead)-Allen (hex) drivers, I believe 5 and 6mm...or 4 and 7... but please don't hold me to that.-10mm wrench or [HASH]3 phillips for battery terminal-12mm socket for front fuel tank bolt-Torx bit (Possibly T30 if I remember correctly)-Patience-Small fingers I began taking pics after the seat and tank plastics were already removed, but I'll do my best to describe how they are removed if you can't figure it out by looking at it. Start by removing your front seat. Go ahead and disconnect the negative lead to your battery as well. Then remove the center "tank pad". - one allen bolt, then lift the rear and wiggle towards rear of bike and it should come out. (annoying design flaw, does yours wiggle too? more on this later) -After that I believe you should be able to see the bolts fastening the inner parts of the tank plastics to...the tank...6 of them. -Then just above the "scoops" on each side, there is one allen bolt. These each have a tiny plastic washer under them so be careful when you pull it out. -One more, slightly bigger, allen bolt a little further toward the rear of the "scoop" -At the rearmost part of the tank plastics on the underside there is one push-clip fastener on each side of the bike. Push in, then use maybe a pocket flathead to pull it out. Be careful of scratching the plastic. After those are all done, very carefully start at the front "scoop" and pull the tank plastic away from the bike. Spread your pulling force as much as possible so you're not just pulling up a corner, rather you're pulling a big section of it. -There are, I think, 3 knobs that push into rubber grommets on the frame that secure it on there pretty good. -The plastics are also sort of snapped into that center section of plastic just aft of the gas tank lid. This part was slightly tricky, a small 90 degree pick or a very careful pocket flathead will aid in un-snapping these parts. -once again, do all of this very carefully and, better yet, lay blankets around the bike on the ground. I wasn't this careful and upon pulling with even force, the left side plastic popped out of its grommets and slipped right out of my butter-fingers and bounced 2 or 3 times before settling onto the asphalt below. Fail. Thankfully they didn't get TOO dinged up. Now for this guy here, there are 2 allen bolts up front on both sides and there is another push-clip near the rear. Remove said fasteners and this whole piece should lift right off the tank. *note: on the right side of the bike, just in front of the tank but covered by this piece, is your ambient air temp sensor. Go ahead and disconnect her but DON'T forget to re-connect or you'll get an error code upon start-up and you'll lose your mind. Trust me. Now, refer to the above pics of the bike if needed. -2 torx screws per side securing the rear of the tank to the frame. Remove these and, once again, forgive me if T30 wasn't the correct size. -1 12mm bolt going through the frame at the front of the tank. It's visible in this pic here. Now you're ready to lift the tank off. *GENTLY* Below the tank, you'll be removing: -2 breather hoses on the right side -disconnect electrical connector to fuel pump At this point, I left the fuel hose connected to the tank and simply finagled in into a resting position toward the rear of the bike. Now, the less stressful part. Sort of. The EJK harness is comprised of 2 fuel injector female connectors and 2 male connectors as well as a little baby ground wire. -Disconnect the harness from your fuel injectors (small fingers help here) -Connect female EJK connectors to fuel injectors. -Connect male EJK connector into the female connectors you removed from the fuel injectors earlier. (connector injector injector connector injection connection....slowly losin my marbles here lol) Here's a slightly fuzzy pic of this operation. Now, route the new harness complication......i mean...addition...however you like, I got it to sit quite nicely inside the little bundle of factory wiring down there so that there would be less of a chance of vibration based chaffing of wires. Then continue routing the remaining wiring, to the controller, toward the rear of the bike. -Once again, I took care to make sure the wiring won't wiggle around or rough itself up against other objects during operation. -I just followed the factory harness to make it easy. I also removed the battery hold down bracket and the rear center plastic panel. Then, because I didn't think about this first, I reached an impasse. -This little bugger of a fuse box was in the way of me putting the oh-so-slim and sleek EJK controller in my "trunk". So I unclipped it from it's location and moved it aside to wiggle the controller under the black brace (between the 2 rubber-baby-buggy-bumpers) into it's final resting place. Now, route the tiny little ground wire from the controller up to the battery, coil her up nice and neat, and add that conveniently designed ringlet to the negative terminal. -Mount the controller however you like. Mine is velcro'd inside the "trunk" in such a way that when the rear seat is removed, you are looking at it straight on and it is super simple to change settings on the fly. At this point, it is at your discretion whether you want to connect up the temp sensor, fuel pump, breather hoses, and negative battery terminal to see if the bike starts and runs correctly before you put allllll that stuff back together. I did, just in case. Install everything in reverse of what I've shown here. As the EJK instruction sheet will tell you, if you've done all of this correctly, you'll start the bike and be blessed with a blinking green dot while it idles (purrs) ever so smoothly. *ALSO* when re-installing the "tank pad" think that is held semi-securely with one bolt, I also added a small chunk of butyl tape (kinda like malleable rubber) to the tab that slides into the other plastic panel. Now, after installation, it feels a hell of a lot more secure and doesn't wiggle at all! If this "article" helps even one person, I will be satisfied and feel I've done a good job. Thank you for reading! :-) 15 '15 FZ-07 '93 Honda XR650L (supermoto/pig) (SOLD)
thestache
Man, thanks for all this hard work...makes me want the Yoshi even more cuz I was lost trying to figure out what the pics were showing me sometimes. Would it be possible for you to add some arrows pointing to the bolts, fasteners...etc. that you are referring to, otherwise, some shop will be doing my EJK install if I get one
magsz18
Very cool man! Thank you! The only thing im not clear about is where exactly the EJK "bolts" in, ie where its connection points connect to.

If you're in socal, I'll do it for a couple beers haha. I was going to add arrows but I figured it wouldn't be too difficult to decipher. Maybe I'll add them next time I get some free time. 1 '15 FZ-07 '93 Honda XR650L (supermoto/pig) (SOLD)

Premium Member Quixote Posted February 25, 2015 Premium Member Share Posted February 25, 2015 Kudos for taking the time to make this so much easier for the rest of us! Your pics show how simple the install actually is. I do have one question though.... Do the injector connectors just unplug, or do you have to release them by pushing in on a tab or by squeezing the connector somehow?

I might just have to take you up on that offer... Did you purchase the EJK separately? Cus I was wondering what it costs if I just purchased the EJK since I already have the exhaust. fzhooligan
If you keep the silencer in the muffler, Yoshi says you don't need a fuel controller. Weather that's true or not for Akra, I couldn't tell you. '15 FZ-07 '93 Honda XR650L (supermoto/pig) (SOLD)
Premium Member crazycracka501 Posted March 31, 2015 Premium Member Share Posted March 31, 2015 Really nice job man, thank you so much. I have an exhaust and EJK on order now and this will come in very handy when it arrives (so damn anxious I can barely stand myself lol). Make it stop!....Now make it go faster! fzhooligan
Don't sweat it cracka. To be honest you could finish this job before you finish a beer. It's a pretty quick and straight forward job. 1 '15 FZ-07 '93 Honda XR650L (supermoto/pig) (SOLD)
jbird
I have the akra carbon and I'm getting so many mixed answers from dealers and forums. I do feel less torque throughout the entire powerband after install, but it's almost not noticable after I got used to it. One dealer told me that power commanders don't work well on yamahas. My engine temp cools down less quickly after rides, but I'm still averaging the about the same mpg. Is buying the ejk really going to assist me, or is it entirely ness. Because I've heard others online say I don't need it, and this point I'm really confused about who to believe. Also how do I get the forum discount for the ejk

Also how do I get the forum discount for the ejk although not completely necessary, because it won't make you run lean and cause engine damage, after a few tweaks to the EJK yoshi tune, I don't feel any flat spots or loss of torque. The bike feels great and pulls hard from pretty much any point on the tach. Well, as hard as a 700 twin should at least. It's no R1 though haha. All in all, I'm definitely satisfied with it and would prefer having the EJK over just having the factory tune. Another thing that woke it up to a real real fun point was adding a 15t front sprocket. Wheelies everywhere ;-) '15 FZ-07 '93 Honda XR650L (supermoto/pig) (SOLD)
